what a weekend!

Topic: Weekend happenings
I bought my bed this weekend! Yay! Bought it from Mattress Discounters - they were having a 15 month no payments / 0% financing offer going on, so I went ahead and just bought the whole thing. I got just a standard frame, didn't get the headboard & footboard and whatnot - the ones that they had were on the pricey side & I didn't see anything that I couldn't live without. The salesguy was really scary though, he hit on me the entire time and I almost walked out of the store.... But I thought that maybe since he thought I was pretty he'd give me a good deal, lol. I think that I got a good discount... it ended up being about a 30% discount, but I'm sure the mark-up is so high on those damn things that 30% isn't that great...

Saturday night was crazy fun... I think that we had something like 11 people in our group when all was said & done! Initially there were 9 of us, though....... Me, Angie, Rebecca, Tiffany, Sara (Ang's little sister), Pilar (Mike's former coworker), Adam, Mike, and Rob (Mike's brother). At any rate, once everyone was finally ready (I was ready when I got there, thank you very much!) we go out to our cars... both me & Rob were driving, so Adam, Ang & Sara started heading out to Roxie when Adam realized that he'd lost his wallet. At least he realized it before we left! After about 10 minutes of frantic searching & telling everyone else to go ahead (7 people in an extended cab pick-up... I bet [haha, i typed bed... oops!] that was fun!) Adam found his wallet & we got on the road... I was quite proud of myself for finding the Belvedere since I hadn't been there in ~3 years. So we get there & meet up with everyone.....the 13th floor was packed and we unfortunately got a table right next to a speaker. Ouch. It was sooo loud. Fortunately someone grabbed us a new table by the band... it was some kind of salsa band or something, reminded me of HFS. :-( It was great people watching in that place, I swear... there was this short & fat balding guy on the dance floor that was dancing with these beautiful women... I'm thinking "what the hell???" Adam told me that he ran into the guy in the club & found out that he's actually a dance instructor & they come there about an hour before the club opens & he teaches dance lessons. Thought that was pretty bizarre! After we moved to our new table, Meredith (another NCHS grad) and her boyfriend Ben showed up... it was really cool being able to talk to all of these people... in our entire group, there were only 2 people that didn't go to NCHS!! How crazy is that??? Of course Rob went 10 years before most of us, but that still counts, I guess. Had some fun talks with pretty much everyone there. Oh, and while all this is going on, my friend Claire (from Prof Paoletti's English class last semester) is text messaging me & telling me that we should come down to this place called Good Love on Boston street... she said that they have great dance music... By this time, Tiffany had found this "crazy Irish boy" (that's what she called him!) and was talking to him....I guess that he & his friends wanted to go somewhere else called Gecko's on Fleet (they said it was 3128 Fleet or something like that), so we rounded up everyone and somehow managed to get down into the lobby. Now none of us really had any clue where this place was, but Tiffany was being pulled into a cab with the crazy Irish boy & co... I think that Ang and Becca took a friend of his hostage so that they'd get Tiff back, lol... but I'm not sure exactly what happened with that. So I tell Mike & Rob that I need to follow them wherever we're going because I don't know how to get there... Meredith & Ben said the same thing... so we're thinking that Mike & Rob are coming through our parking lot to show us the way... Adam was with me and Sara had hopped in with Meredith & Ben. I had none of their cell numbers, of course... and I ended up following Ben through the city on a wild goose chase... he had no clue where the hell they were going & he was getting directions transferred to him from Sara who was on the phone with Mike & Ang (they were all in Rob's truck)... oh, it was a huge mess. After driving around the city for 20 minutes, I was ready to bag it & find Claire down at Good Love... so I kept trying to pull up with Ben & co to tell them that we'd just see them at Tiff's, but the light would change as soon as we got up to them... I ended up pulling ahead & taking the lead and thankfully found Gecko's without too much more frustration. So we get in Gecko's AND THEY'RE NOT THERE!!! By "they" I'm referring to Mike, Rob, Ang, Becca & Pilar. By this time it's about 1 a.m., so me, Adam, Sara, Meredith & Ben decided to hell with everyone else, we're staying here... haha. I find out from Sara that Mike, Rob, Ang, Becca & Pilar had gone back to Mike & Tiff's & were walking over to Shorty's, 2 blocks from their house and Tiff had gone over to the crazy Irish boy's place. So the five of us shot pool until closing time and then went back to Mike & Tiff's.... Sara and Ang were mad at each other, so Sara decided that she was going to stay with Meredith & Ben that night & they would take her to her car in Annapolis the next day. Of course there's more to it than that, but that's the bulk of it & all that I'm admitting to, haha! Fun, fun. The next day we went to breakfast at Jimmy's in Fells Point... I say breakfast, but it was actually noon. After we got back, we got into a discussion over who was the best James Bond & of course there was a disagreement, which led to a discussion of how hot Pierce Brosnan is & how he looked in the Thomas Crown Affair, so we ended up watching TCA that afternoon. Yep. Didn't get back to my mom's until 4 p.m. I was completely exhausted & watched football in bed for the rest of the day. Heh. Speaking of which, it looks like my Superbowl prediction was wrong... so now I think it's going to be Pats vs. Eagles. I dunno, though... the Steelers might surprise me this weekend, plus it's in Pittsburgh... so we'll see.

Wow... I'll actually be watching the championships in my own place!!! How cool is that? I'm so excited.... :-)

Hmm. Just talked to Paish & she's coming home to the shore for part of the week so I'm thinking I might need to be making a trip across the ditch tomorrow or Wednesday. That's it for now....... Will post tomorrow hopefully.

btw it freaking snowed last night and Roxie is all salty now... she is absolutely disgusting... she really needs to be washed, but if it snows on wednesday then i'll just have to do it again. :-/

Just got done dying my hair... red again, of course.. . the red just doesn't stay. That's the third time in as many months!

I didn't post about this, but my friend Rob (a fellow LC follower) lost his battle with cancer last week & his service is today... so I'm going to that. I'm hoping that some people that I know will be there so I can sit with them... I didn't know any of his family or anything. After that I'll probably go to good old Glen Burnie to shop the mattress stores... I've decided that I'm going to go with a queen instead of taking my mom's old full bed... a queen is more practical & I'll probably have it for the next ??? years. Mattress discounters is having some kind of special financing, so what the hell... I'll be able to get something nice. I deserve it, right?

After that, tonight is Ang's bday celebration, so me, Ang, Tiff, Adam, Mike, Sara and a whole bunch of other people are going to the 13th floor. I think. I invited Dyanna from work, too... so I'm going to have to call her later on to coordinate. I hope that it doesn't end up being too many people. Eh.... oh well. Talked to Stef earlier today & she was going to talk to TJ to see if he's up to going... I hope that they come.

Well, I guess that's it... I've got to get ready.

Hope everyone has/is having a good weekend!

I can't get this damn song out of my head.........

I should just put it on repeat so I get tired of it and I don't want to listen to it anymore. The song????? Why can't I....... I never really listened to the lyrics until a little while ago and now I'm just hooked. It was always a catchy song, but now it's just.............. aha!! I understand that song now!

Lots of fun. Of course I knew that it would be.

I feel like I got run over by a mack truck this morning, though. Got to sleep around 1 a.m. and woke up with a migraine at 3:30 a.m. Oh, it sucked. This wasn't the average pulsating pain behind my left eye that I usually get - this was the full-blown move and you'll throw up kind. Not fun. Somehow I managed to get down my Imitrex and after curling up in the fetal position was able to get back to sleep sometime around 5... and here I am at work!

Meet the Fockers was hilarious...... go see it.

I forgot to mention the most important thing -- I've decided on my place!! :) Of course, I'd pretty much decided as soon as I started talking to Heather (my new roomie), but I wasn't 100% sure until I saw the place & met her. She's extremely cool & laid back and I think that we're going to get along great. At any rate, it's not too far from where I used to live -- it's still in Pasadena, near High Point elementary & Tick Neck park. I'll be moving in next weekend (22nd), so I'm very excited. I can't believe that I'm almost 25 and have never technically lived on my own. I mean, I'll still have a roommate, so I won't be alone - alone, but it's the first time that I haven't lived with a guy or my parents. That's pretty pathetic, isn't it?

Oh well, everyone has to start sometime!

Now the problem is just going to be finding the happy balance between school, work & play. I think that I'm responsible enough now to distribute those things well... :) Yay. I'm just so damn happy. Change doesn't always have to be a bad thing... I think that I went through most of the emotions relating to this decision a long time ago, so now that I finally acted on everything I feel so much better. I was getting pretty down in November & December and now I just feel so much... lighter... that's the right word for it. I have just as much (if not more) responsibility, but I just feel better about everything, because it's all on my terms. I don't even know if any of this is making sense. Heh...... who cares anyway! Here I am, rambling inanely... no false advertising here! The only false advertising I have is thanks to my Frederick's water bra that I adore...... oh, did I say that out loud? Haha!!!

*sigh*

Today is a good day. Work is busy, but today is a good day.

Tonight I'm going to Mills......... DuClaw is releasing their new beer "Old Flame". Funny, isn't it?

My favorite radio station changed format yesterday... from alternative rock to spanish pop music. God help us all.

I've been listening to HFS since I was 13... the 1994 HFStival was the first major concert that I went to (after Def Leppard and Ugly Kid Joe, of course), and I have attended it many times since then... the last HFS concert that I attended was just a month ago, when I went to the HFSmas nutcracker - their Christmas show.

This just sucks.

Anyway, here is the article from the washington post

WHFS Changes Its Tune to Spanish
Alternative Rock Pioneer Targets Latino Audience

By Teresa Wiltz and Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, January 13, 2005; Page A01

WHFS-FM, the Washington area radio station that was a pioneering purveyor of alternative rock to generations of young music fans, did a programming U-turn yesterday by ditching the genre for a Spanish-language, pop-music format that transforms it into the largest Spanish-language station on the local dial.

In an instant, the station abandoned the likes of the White Stripes, Green Day and Jet for middle-of-the-road superstars such as Marc Anthony, Juan Luis Guerra and Victor Manuelle.

The switch reflects both changing demographics and a corporate war of attrition involving Washington's two major radio station owners, Infinity Broadcasting, which owns WHFS, and Clear Channel Communications, which owns WHFS's chief competitor, DC-101.

Despite its self-proclaimed "legendary" status, WHFS (at 99.1 on the dial) has long trailed DC-101 in the race to win the ears of rock listeners in the Washington-Baltimore area. At the same time, Spanish-language radio is the fastest-growing format in the country, while alternative rock radio is a withering niche.

At noon yesterday, the station behind the HFStival, a popular annual concert, broadcast the late Jeff Buckley's 1995 hit, "Last Goodbye." And then came something that WHFS listeners hadn't heard before in the station's 36-year history as the arbiter of cutting-edge rock:

"WHFS transmitiendo desde la ciudad capital de America:

"Esta! Es! Tu! Nueva! Radio!"

"Transmitting from America's Capital City: This! Is! Your! New! Radio!"

Lanham-based WHFS is now "El Zol," where they're "siempre de fiesta" -- always partying. (Zol plays off sol, the Spanish word for sun, and is a station brand of the Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. which owns other "Zol" stations.)

Although radio insiders have discussed the likelihood of WHFS changing formats for many months, the switch came as a shock to former employees and fans who grew up listening to the radio station that, since the late 1960s, had gained a reputation as the place to go for new music. Radio stations often switch formats and often without promoting the change in advance.

WHFS was among a handful of stations that developed the album-oriented format: The music was alternative and free-form, featuring such groups as Led Zeppelin, the Who and Yes, but with the occasional bluegrass or other unexpected ditty. Disc jockeys weren't confined to the strictures of a corporate-mandated playlist. They played what they wanted.

Out of this freewheeling approach came the station's music festival, which grew from an offbeat spring event to a nationally recognized bacchanalia that last year drew 65,000 people to RFK Stadium.

"Certainly this will have major ramifications for new music in Washington, D.C.," said Seth Hurwitz, owner of the city's 9:30 club and producer of last year's HFStival, with featured 36 acts. "They were always the forerunner for presenting new music," said Hurwitz, who began his career in 1976 as a disc jockey at the station. "They were a vital fabric of Washington's culture."

WHFS began as a classical music station, then switched to pop music in the early-to-mid-1960s before turning to rock about 1968. The moves were orchestrated by Jake Einstein, who began as an advertising salesman and became one of the station's owners in the mid-1960s.

Einstein's son, Damian, a longtime on-air personality on WHFS, said yesterday that the station's reputation as a maverick programmer began to decline more than a decade ago, at the beginning of a rapid consolidation of ownership in the industry.

"They really weren't interested in the music anymore," said Einstein, who was one of WHFS's best-known personalities and who is now the program director at WRNR-FM, a small alternative rock station in Annapolis. "There really wasn't that much creativity there. Having been there for so long and having done so many things there, of course it's sad. But I guess you gotta do what you gotta do."

Doing what they've got to do includes wooing the Latino radio market, the fastest growing in the business. The audience of Spanish-language stations has grown 37 percent since 1998 and currently accounts for about 9 percent of all listeners. (Some radio experts believe that this understates the actual audience, as it does not take into account the large numbers of undocumented Latinos for whom the radio is a vital source of information.) In 2003, Latin album sales increased 16 percent, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In the Washington area, the Hispanic population has grown more than 25 percent in the last four years, Infinity says. "El Zol's" playlist is aimed at the region's largely Central American population, featuring Caribbean and Central American dance music, mostly salsa, merengue and bachata.

The station will target radio's "money demographic": Adults ages 25 to 54. Washington has five other radio stations aimed at Spanish speakers: WBZS-FM, WPLC-FM and WKDL-AM, all owned by Mega Broadcasting; WILC-AM, owned by ZGS Broadcasting; and WACA-AM, owned by Entrevision.

Spanish-language radio programs have scored some notable successes in recent years. In New York, "La Mega" (WSKQ-FM) has a morning show that frequently trumps Howard Stern in the quarterly Arbitron ratings, according to Seth Rosen, media director for Reynardus and Moya, a New York-based advertising agency that caters to the Latino market.

The Viacom media conglomerate owns Infinity Broadcasting, which in turn also owns Washington area stations WPGC-FM and AM, WARW-FM and WJFK-FM. Recently, it has been flipping some of its weaker-performing stations across the country to a Spanish-language format, reflecting an industry trend. The switches have been prompted by Infinity's alliance with the Spanish Broadcasting System Inc., the nation's largest Latino-controlled radio broadcasting company. Infinity owns an equity interest in the Florida-based company, which served as a consultant on the WHFS reformatting.

"We did extensive research about the Washington, D.C., market," said Infinity spokeswoman Karen Mateo. "We realized there was a void there for approximately 10 percent of the market."

The switch leaves the futures of WHFS's on-air personalities and other employees in question. Although Infinity has not announced personnel changes, insiders speculate that the station's most popular personalities, the Sports Junkies, will probably be reassigned to WJFK-FM.

No decision has been made about the future of HFStival, Mateo said.

Despite the arrival last year of Lisa Worden, a highly touted programming director, WHFS's progress in the ratings has been slow. The station ranked 20th overall in the most recent Arbitron audience survey, and ninth among its key target audience -- listeners 18 to 34. WHFS's demise as a rock station will likely benefit its chief rival, DC-101, but could also help more pop-oriented music stations such as Z104-FM and Hot 99.5, said Jim Farley, a veteran of Washington radio who is a vice president of WTOP, the all-news station. WTOP's owner, Bonneville International, also owns Z104; Clear Channel owns Hot 99.5, as well as DC-101.

"HFS is an institution around here, but the station has been struggling for a while," said Joe Howard, Washington bureau chief for Radio & Records, a research and analysis firm that also produces an industry magazine.

"I think Infinity saw this as an opportunity to attack an underserved market."

Staff writer Sean Daly contributed to this report.

This really sucks. I don't know what I'm going to listen to on the radio anymore... I'll probably flip around and not really commit to one station. I don't get any other station on my radio at work, and I'm sure as hell not going to listen to Latino music in the morning! DC101's morning show bugs the hell out of me, I can't stand the hyena's laugh. Ugh. 98 rock is okay, I guess. I'll figure it out. :-/

At least the Junkies will still be on somewhere.

20 Best Excuses for Calling in Sick

By Kate Lorenz, CareerBuilder.com Editor

You've heard of the dog who ate homework, but what about the cat who unplugged the alarm clock? These days, people are getting very creative when they don't want to go to work.

In CareerBuilder's survey "Out of the Office," more than one-third of U.S. workers say they played hooky from work over the last twelve months. Thirty-five percent of workers admit to calling in sick when they felt well at least once during the last year and one-in-ten said they did so three or more times.

Why are they calling in sick? The top three motivators for faking include attending to personal errands and appointments, catching up on sleep and simply relaxing. The reasons also include attending a child's event, bad weather, making plans with friends and going on a job interview.

"With the cold and flu season kicking in, it's a popular time of year for employees to call in sick," said Rosemary Haefner, Senior Career Advisor for CareerBuilder.com. "However, the number of those who are actually feeling under the weather may not necessarily match up with unscheduled absences. Twenty percent of workers say they called into work because they just didn't feel like going into the office that day. One-in-four workers report they feel sick days are equivalent to extra vacation days and treat them as such."

The 2004 CCH Unscheduled Absence Survey, conducted for CCH by Harris Interactive? confirmed this trend. CCH found most employees who fail to show up for work, however, aren't physically ill, according to the survey. In fact, the study found only 38 percent of unscheduled absences are due to personal illness, while 62 percent are for other reasons, including family issues (23 percent), personal needs (18 percent), stress (11 percent) and entitlement mentality (10 percent).

One trend that also may be influencing the higher rate of unscheduled absences is the fact that the number of employers allowing employees to carry over sick time from one year to the next is trending downward and has dropped from more than one-half of companies (51 percent) in 2000 to 37 percent in 2004. As a result, employees may be saying, "I'd rather use it than lose it," noted Lori Rosen, J.D., CCH workplace analyst, and author of HR Networking: Work-Life Benefits.

But could you get away with saying you had to go to your mother's dog's funeral or that you had brain cancer? Would you believe an employee who had the swine flu, forgot the way to work, or was arrested because of mistaken identity? Think carefully, if you're debating calling in sick, here are some of the most unusual excuses workers gave for missing work.

I was sprayed by a skunk.

I tripped over my dog and was knocked unconscious. (that would actually happen to me)

My bus broke down and was held up by robbers.

I was arrested as a result of mistaken identity. (that too!)

I forgot to come back to work after lunch. (this happens an awful lot at Harms... I have to say that I've only done it once or twice, though!)

I couldn't find my shoes.

I hurt myself bowling. (I do that every time I try - I'm such a klutz!)

I was spit on by a venomous snake. (might work for Steve Irwin!)

I totaled my wife's jeep in a collision with a cow. (this would happen in Caroline County!)

A hitman was looking for me.

My curlers burned my hair and I had to go to the hairdresser.

I eloped. (Britney Spears, maybe?)

My brain went to sleep and I couldn't wake it up. (that's every day for me)

My cat unplugged my alarm clock. (don't laugh, I think that this happened to me!)

I had to be there for my husband's grand jury trial.

I had to ship my grandmother's bones to India. (that's just wrong)

I forgot what day of the week it was. (yep!)

Someone slipped drugs in my drink last night.

A tree fell on my car.

My monkey died. (I love that one!)
